Carmelo Guastella

Although only 34, Carmelo Guastella brings 25 years experience in the men's grooming industry. From the age of nine, when he wasn't at school, he could be found shaving and cutting men's hair at his local barbershop in Ribera, Sicily.

A talented artist, he swapped drawing classes for a chance to turn men's heads into what some say are 'works of art'. Or, as the FT Magazine described, "his haircuts grow out of the man, like Michelangelo releasing David from marble". In March 2007, Carmelo was also named "Barber of choice" by GQ.

Carmelo gained further experience as a stylist at two of Italy's top hairdressing salons, alternating between winters in Turin and summers on Sardinia's 'Emerald Coast'. He subsequently realised his ambition to work in London, joining a new and exclusive men's grooming spa, The Refinery in Mayfair.

During his five years at The Refinery, Carmelo established his reputation as a highly respected hairstylist and men's grooming consultant, developing a significant clientele, whilst also training in cosmetic product development and men's skincare. His perfectionism resulted in a string of famous clients including Sasha Baron Cohen (Ali G), Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand and media coverage in the FT Weekend, GQ, and Arena amongst others.

Working at this level, he was aware of how important it was to keep on top of the latest products and innovations, and undertook degree-level studies in Cosmetic Science at the University of the Arts.

For three years, from January 2004 till April 2006, Carmelo was appointed to the panel of judges for the New Women Beauty Awards deciding on the best new men's grooming product or range and best new men's fragrance.
In November 2004, Carmelo opened his first men's grooming salon, Melogy. Two years later he launched the Melogy 100% natural shaving oil. Carmelo has also developed a service offering bespoke shaving oils tailored to your skin type.

In February 2007 Carmelo worked on the set of Sweeney Todd, directed by Tim Burton, teaching Sacha Baron Cohen shaving techniques for his role as Italian barber Signor Pirelli.

With over 20 years' experience working in the luxury grooming field, Carmelo has been consulted by a number of high profile clients and is now pleased to offer an image consultancy service. Carmelo's bespoke service reflects his belief that the appearance of influential people should convey their power and capability.

Carmelo has also given advice to Philips on men's grooming trends and future product development.

Carmelo now offers his services at the Intercontinental Hotel, Park Lane London.
